International Day of the African Child 2021

International Day of the African Child takes place on June 16, 2021. The Day of the African Child has been celebrated every year since 1991, when it was first initiated by the Organisation of African Unity. It honors those who participated in the Soweto Uprising in 1976 on that day. It also raises awareness of the continuing need for improvement of the education provided to African children.
In Soweto, South Africa, on June 16, 1976, about ten thousand black school children marched in a column more than half a mile long, protesting the poor quality of their education and demanding their right to be taught in their own language. Hundreds of young students were shot, the most famous of which being Hector Peterson. More than a hundred people were killed in the protests of the following two weeks, and more than a thousand were injured.

International day of the girl child

Digital Generation .Our Generation. Digital revolution? not without girls!

Celebrating the International day of the girl child today by creating awareness through the radio.

Discussants have advised parents to take priority in nurturing their children, especially the girl-child; by giving them sound education and making them aware of their rights in order to prevent them from gender-based violence and discrimination. They gave the advice while featuring on the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State radio station, FUNAAB Radio 89.5FM live interactive, Boiling Point. The programme was in commemoration of the 2021 International Day of Girl-Child with the theme, “Digital Generation: Our Generation”. They argued that every child must be treated equally. According to the Director, Budding Leaders Empowerment Initiative, Prof. Iyabo Kehinde, parents should always be ready to hear their children, especially the girl-child, whom she described as emotional and sensitive while emphasising that girls were more vulnerable, thus making them subject to attacks.

“A girl-child is one who is a female and prone to many vulnerabilities that the other sex may not be prone to”, she said. Also, the General Secretary, Child Protection Network, Ogun State, Mrs. Oviutu Adeleke, asked parents to take the issue of their female children more seriously so that they can confide in them. According to Mrs. Adeleke, “Mothers should take the issue of their children seriously and they should know that there are modes of correcting their children by showing love to them”. In the same vein, a legal practitioner, Barr. Clement Obasanya, urged parents to create good relationships with their children by informing them regularly on things they need to know, particularly their rights, stating that “If you are not informed, you will be deformed”, he noted. The discussants enjoined all to take proper care of girls to enable them to contribute meaningfully to the upliftment of society.

BUDLEIN CELEBRATES 2021 INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S BOOK DAY (ICBD)

THEME: MUSIC OF THE WORDS.

ICBD is celebrated to

(i) promote a love of reading in young people

(ii) To call attention to children’s books

THE INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S BOOK DAY MESSAGE

The music of words

When we read, our minds grow wings.

When we write, our fingers sing.

Words are drumbeats and flutes on the page,

soaring songbirds and trumpeting elephants,

rivers that flow, waterfalls tumbling,

butterflies that twirl

high in the sky!

Words invite us to dance—rhythms, rhymes, heartbeats,

hoofbeats, and wingbeats, old tales and new ones,

fantasies and true ones.

Whether you are cozy at home

or racing across borders toward a new land

and a strange language, stories and poems

belong to you.

When we share words, our voices

become the music of the future,

peace, joy and friendship,

a melody of hope.
